Common questions

What It Costs to Get It Sorted

Money first, because it is what everyone wants to know and nobody wants to ask.

Is the quote really free?

Yes, free either way, whether you go ahead with us or ring someone else. A sparkie walks the job with you, works out what it actually needs and puts the price on paper, and there is no call-out fee for quoting.

What does the $50 off your first service cover?

It comes off the price of the job itself, not off some inflated starting point. There is nothing to sign up to and no voucher to print, and it sits on top of the free quote rather than replacing it.

Do prices change once you start?

No. The price we quote is the price you pay, even where the job turns into a longer day than we planned, and on the rare occasion something nobody could have seen turns up behind the plaster, we stop, show you and re-price it with you before carrying on.

How do I pay?

The quote holds the lot before we start: labour, gear, GST, testing and the certificate on notifiable electrical work. Same amount at the end as the one you agreed to, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Common questions

Licensed, Insured and Done Properly

The dull paperwork questions matter most when someone is standing at your switchboard.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes, on all three counts. We hold NSW Electrical Contractor Licence #452529C, we are Master Electricians Australia members and fully insured, and the work is done to the AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules with a Certificate of Compliance on notifiable work.

What brands do you install?

Mostly Clipsal and Hager on the boards, with SAL, Beacon Lighting and Gardens at Night for light fittings. If you have a brand in mind, tell us and we will price the job that way, provided the gear meets the standard.

Can I do my own electrical work in NSW?

No. DIY electrical work is illegal in NSW, and that covers swapping a light fitting or moving a power point, however easy the video made it look, because getting it wrong risks a fire, a fine and your insurance cover.

What is a safety switch and do I need one?

A safety switch (RCD) cuts power the instant current starts leaking through something it should not, and that something is usually a person. A fuse cannot do that job, which is why we fit a safety switch on every circuit whenever we upgrade a board.

Common questions

When We Can Come

Timing, triage and what sits between your phone call and a knock at the door.

What counts as an electrical emergency?

Anything you can smell, see or feel. A hot burnt smell at the board or a socket, sparks, a switch too warm to keep your hand on, or power that drops out over and over, and if you can safely do it, turn it off at the switchboard and ring us.

How fast can you get here?

Often same or next day on standard work. A genuine emergency gets a response whatever the hour, and when it is urgent ring instead of emailing, because the phone reaches a real person rather than a form waiting in an inbox till morning.

Do you work weekends?

For a genuine emergency, yes, weekends and public holidays included. Planned work on a Saturday depends on what is already in the diary, so ring and ask rather than assume, and you will hear a yes or a no rather than a maybe.

What happens after I call?

We hear you out, and on an emergency a licensed electrician triages it over the phone before anyone drives anywhere. Otherwise we book you in for a time that suits, then quote it on site before a tool leaves the van.

Common questions

Local Answers for Coogee

Local ought to mean more than a suburb name dropped into a header. Here is what it means here.

How local are you, really?

This is home turf, and we are in Coogee most weeks. The regular run also covers Randwick, Clovelly, Maroubra, Bronte, Kensington and Kingsford, so what turns up is a sparkie who has already worked in a place built like yours.

Do you work on heritage or strata properties?

Both, and this suburb serves up plenty of each. Strata work means sorting access and approvals before anyone opens a board, and period cottages mean working around double brick, render and whatever the last four decades left behind the walls.

Do you know Coogee's housing stock?

Well enough to have a fair idea what is waiting behind the plaster before we open it. The mix runs from Federation and Victorian cottages up to the mid-rise blocks that went in from the 1930s onward, and every one of those generations was wired for far less load than you run today.

Can you handle new builds and renovations here?

Yes to both, though conversions and renovations are what drives most of the work in the denser streets. A new kitchen or a second bathroom puts modern loads on a board that was never sized for them, so a switchboard upgrade usually rides along with the reno.
